Once again, an academic semester is lurching and staggering to a close. I must admit that I am not certain what has happened to secondary education the past decade but when you have 125 freshman composition students and less than 20 actually did a research paper at any point in their previous academic lives, I must grieve for tomorrows leadership today.
And, to quote one of my students, "so what's with this attendance policy thing...is that bogus crap or what?" Well, I suppose it could be viewed that way. I know that, personally, I get tired of calling out the same names to the same empty desks session after session only to have the little darling show up weeks before finals with a fist-full of scrap paper that they call their assignments and want to get an "A" because they mystically appeared in the classroom.
Perhaps we, as parents, are to blame for attempting to make life too simple and easy for your children. Perhaps the lack of responsibility comes from our trying to protect them from the real world instead of letting them get the realities of life kicked into them. Perhaps I'm just getting disenchanted with the whole thing.
But at least I have a job.
